Nut Free School
Please can we remind you that Bernard Gilpin Primary School is a nut free school.
We have several children who have nut allergies that can develop into serious allergic reactions. For this reason, nuts and nut-based products are not allowed on the school grounds.
An allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) can occur through eating nut products and for some children, contact with nuts through touch or inhalation. Since this condition can be life threatening, we are asking all members of the school community for their continued support in minimising the risk to these children. Please:
Avoid giving children nuts or nut products in their packed lunches, for example:
· Peanut butter/Nutella sandwiches
· some cereal/fruit bars
· packets of nuts
· chocolate bars/sweets e.g. Reese’s cups
· cakes that contain nuts
· biscuits/cookies that contain nuts
· some Asian food, (including satay sauces that contain nuts)
· pastries covered in nuts e.g. almond croissant
· homecooked meals which are made with nuts
This list is not exhaustive, so please check the packaging of products closely. We appreciate that this is an additional thing to check and we know that you recognise the importance of it.
Avoiding giving nuts or nut products or snack/cereal bars containing nuts for break time/after-school snacks.
School unfortunately cannot accept cakes or food items for birthday celebrations for the above reasons.
We do acknowledge in our Allergies policy that many foods are labelled as ‘may have been produced in a factory handling nuts and cannot be guaranteed to be nut free’. Such items will be allowed in school as it would be unreasonable to expect these to be kept out of school.
Please note where a member of staff notices a pupil eating a nut product, the product will be removed politely and the member of staff will explain why this has to be done.
We thank you in advance for your co-operation and support regarding this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.
